Efficiency and Complexity in Grammars: Three General Principles
نویسنده
چکیده
An interesting general correlation appears to be emerging between variation data in performance, in languages that dispose of several structures of a given type, and the fixed conventions of grammars, in languages with fewer structures of the same type. The performance data come from corpus frequencies and processing experiments, the grammatical data from our expanding samples of languages and from the growing number of languages that have now been subjected to in-depth analysis. The Keenan-Comrie Accessibility Hierarchy was an early example of such a correlation, whereby an implicational hierarchy in cross-linguistic relativization possibilities (SU>DO> IO/OBL>GEN) was argued to correlate with ease of relativization and with relativization preferences in a language (English) with many relativizable positions (Keenan and Comrie 1977, Keenan 1975, Keenan and Hawkins 1987). The preferred word orders in languages with choices have also been argued to be those that are productively grammaticalized in languages with fixed orders, and in almost exact proportion to their degree of preference, in Hawkins (1994, 1998a, 2001). The goal of this paper is to define a hypothesis concerning the relationship between performance and grammars, and to propose three general prin-

The Complexity of Learning Principles and Parameters Grammars
We investigate models for learning the class of context-free and context-sensitive languages (CFLs and CSLs). We begin with a brief discussion of some early hardness results which show that unrestricted language learning is impossible, and unrestricted CFL learning is computationally infeasible; we then briefly survey the literature on algorithms for learning restricted subclasses of the CFLs. ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Reducing Lexical and Syntactic Complexity of Texts on Reading Comprehension
The present study investigated the effect of different types of text simplification (i.e., reducing the lexical and syntactic complexity of texts) on reading comprehension of English as a Foreign Language learners (EFL). Sixty female intermediate EFL learners from three intact classes in Tabarestan Language Institute in Tehran participated in the study. The intact classes were assigned to three...
متن کاملCompressed Domain Scene Change Detection Based on Transform Units Distribution in High Efficiency Video Coding Standard
Scene change detection plays an important role in a number of video applications, including video indexing, searching, browsing, semantic features extraction, and, in general, pre-processing and post-processing operations. Several scene change detection methods have been proposed in different coding standards. Most of them use fixed thresholds for the similarity metrics to determine if there wa...
متن کاملPathology of Administrative Law in Nursing Practices
Introduction Nurses' behaviors and behaviors and decisions in the field of their activities, like other government employees, are emerging in the functioning of the state. These acts and behaviors are governed by the principles that are known as the principles governing administration. These principles, which include must and do not, are the behavior and services of the nurses Under the rule o...
متن کاملSome Experiments on Indicators of Parsing Complexity for Lexicalized Grammars
In this paper, we identify syntactic lexical ambiguity and sentence complexity as factors that contribute to parsing complexity in fully lexicalized grammar formalisms such as Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammars. We also report on experiments that explore the effects of these factors on parsing complexity. We discuss how these constraints can be exploited in improving efficiency of parsers for ...
